Hoover Alexander Does It Again!
Hoover Alexander, Austin’s master of Southern-style cuisine and founder of the inestimable bistro Hoover’s Cooking on Manor Road has won yet another award. His Chicken Fried Chicken was named to a Ten- Best in the World list by a consortium of online food aficionados. Wow, huh?
Now I know what you’re thinking. Best in the world?? Come on! These awards proliferate to infinity online and their origins may be sometimes suspect.
But in the case of my longtime friend and former Good Eats chef Hoover I think that no amount of superlatives, a bit biased or otherwise, can be enough. He is a towering presence in the kitchen and his work is deserving of any accolades that come his way.
From his chicken-fried delights to his astonishing smothered pork chops along with his superlative weekend Hoe Cakes, the man has been a force of nature on the Austin dining scene for over 30 years. The blackboard on the wall at Hoover’s Cooking is loaded with incomparable goodies – even his steamed broccoli is terrific and I have never been anything but pleased by any dish I’ve tried there.
So hats off to world-class Hoover Alexander, a man whose heart is as big as his talent. He’s an Austin treasure and his restaurant has must-visit status!
