This is my homage to the venerable
hot dog. They have been around the US, in one form or another since
1883. While the individual who conceived putting the "dog"
in the roll is generally thought to be St. Louis sausage purveyor
A.L. Feuchtwanger, that too is the subject of fierce debate. Doesn't
matter. The "dog" is a part of Americana. And in Austin,
I have long lamented that while burger joints may abound, the hot
dog has been decidedly underrepresented. |
So I am tickled to introduce you to Dog Almighty,
an Austin joint with three locations that serves up a variety of hot
dogs. We're here at the S. Lamar Store today. So we gonna let the dogs
out!
Dog Almighty made a smart move in not exclusively
limiting their fare to Chicago-style dogs as another failed dogporium
did. Now I love Chicago dogs. You ad the tomatoes, pickles, relish,
onions and celery salt and I can almost feel the wind blowing off Lake
Michigan. Great dog. But tastes in Austin vary. So you have the Pfluger
Dog with homemade sauerkraut, deli mustard and onions. I can get equally
excited about this one as well. Great taste. Or how about the Texas
styled "Classic" with their original chili, grated cheddar
cheese, mustard and onions. This dog can fail if the chili is not up
to the mark. But Dog Almighty nails it. And of course Austin has to
have a Dot Com Dog with relish, mustard and onions. You need some serious
gigs of ram to step up to this dog. A pocket protector would probably
help as well.
And you've got to love the Broken Spoke Dog. Now
if the thought of putting BBQ sauce and caramelized onions on a hot
dog is repugnant to you, then you're going to have to hand in your license
to two-step. And last but not least, the Jalapeno Corn Dog. The buttermilk
batter coats the dog and the jalapenos kick it up a little bit. What's
not to like about a corn dog? And Dog Almighty thoughtfully provided
one for us.
For those poor souls who are hot dog averse, and
we recognize there are some of you, Dog Almighty has considered your
needs. Why you can get that most ubiquitous of all Texas snacks, the
Frito Pie. The good news is that this combo of fritos, chili, cheese,
onions and jalapenos beats the heck out of what you'd find at the average
DQ. And Dog Almighty serves up a decent cheeseburger as well, if you
must. Regarding the sides: the fries and tater tots are tasty as are
the onion rings. These sides are necessary and part of the hot dog enjoyment
process.
Dog Almighty has locations on S. Lamar, Guadalupe
just north of campus and on Burnet (in the farmer's market). I, for
one, am glad they are in business. A visit and I suspect you will be
as well.
