Rob Finds a Great Breakfast at Grandmother’s Kitchen in Woodland Park, Colorado
We’ve often lamented about the inadequacies of the Austin breakfast restaurant scene.
So on a brief trip to see our daughter and her husband in Woodlank Park, Colorado, (elevation 8,435 ft), my radar suddenly started pinging and there, like a beacon in the primordial mist, was a cozy spot called Grandmother’s Kitchen.
I walked in to take a look and was immediately struck by the smells of fresh muffins, bacon and the aromatic melange that one expects at a great breakfast place. My waitress Jenn told me that the place had been open for 33 years, making it a landmark in a town that had literally begun as a water stop for stage coaches and later trains in the 1870s and slowly grew into a tourist spot.
From the first bite of my extra large fulsome breakfast burrito with creamy white sausage gravy covering, egg, and veggies, I was smitten.
The pancakes rivaled anything I’ve ever tried at Kerbey Lane or Austin Java. They were smooth with an engaging flavor and nice texture.
The Eggs Benedict were also a blast, with a terrific hollandaise layered over fresh Canadian bacon and expertly cooked eggs that were the perfect complement to the fresh English muffins.
We expect to make several more visits to Grandmother’s before we head back to Austin. Best of all you can see Pike’s Peak as you walk out the door.
Truly a Colorado Rocky Mountain high!
