Sunday Brunch at the Famous Broadmoor in Colorado

The Broadmoor

The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs has been one of America’s top destination resorts for years and is well known for its many dining options.

I got to try the Sunday Brunch at the Lake Terrace Dining Room on Father’s Day and it was packed! Over 600 covers according to the GM. It’s a lovely room overlooking the lake behind the main hotel and is very tastefully appointed. The servers, much like on a cruise ship, are predominantly multinational and add to the interesting atmosphere. We were served by a young man from Hungary, a woman from Thailand, and another young man from Bosnia. The price for the brunch is reasonable at $39.95.

The spread was large, not unlike the Sunday brunch at our own Trio at the Four Seasons (arguably the best in town although considerably more pricey than the Broadmoor). The only thing lacking at the Broadmoor, in my opinion, was the sushi roll and dumpling section that Trio routinely provides.

The Eggs Benedict was quite good (spot-on Hollandaise) along with well-prepared breakfast meats and some seriously tasty sausage gravy. Of course there was an Omelet station as well, and unlike at some brunches I’ve tried, the cook really knew how to make one that wasn’t so dry that it was inedible. And the smoked salmon and Caprese salad were excellent. There were multiple salads and sides, and a particularly tasty group of cooked vegetables (especially the Brussel Sprouts). There was a pasta station that I passed on because there was no whole-wheat option but my son-in-law tried it and was pleased with it. The standard Prime Rib roast was beautifully prepared with a lovely horseradish sauce. I was pleased to see sections of roast duck next to the prime rib. Unfortunately, the two pieces I took were both vastly overcooked. That was really the only negative in an otherwise enjoyable meal.

The dessert section was massive and included a chocolate fountain (with strawberries for dipping), an assortment of pies, the Broadmoor’s version of Bananas Foster (very tasty), Bread Pudding (I passed but Jenn loved it) and some absolutely irresistible Rice Krispie Treats which we all devoured. There was also a substantial selection of fresh seasonal fruits as well.

The service was quite good, and our international servers were both poised and personable. They really added to the experience. The Kir Royale that my wife ordered came out a bit on the strong side, and our Hungarian waiter instantly and quite cordially replaced it. Nice touch.

Finally, as is often the case when we dine with John and Jenn, we noted that they were beginning to take down the tables and the buffet. We were the last diners in the massive room. We left, full and content, and drove up to Cripple Creek in the mountains. All in all, a very nice Father’s day. I would recommend the brunch at the Broadmoor if you happen to be in or near Colorado Springs!
