80 lbs. Lighter, Rob Goes Back to Max’s Wine Dive!
Met Gonzos Art and Carol San Miguel at Max’s Wine Dive at 3rd and San Jacinto the other night. It had been a while since I’d been there (actually our last Gonzo Gourmet Dinner) and my exile had been self-imposed. While I was in my serious weight-loss mode, I simply couldn’t trust myself around J.P. Lacoste’s famous Fried Chicken, not to mention the Fried Egg Sandwich.
But there I was, confident in my new ability not to eat everything on my plate and everyone else’s around me, seriously buzzed about going back to one of my favorite spots, Max’s.
Let me tell you it was every bit as good as I had recalled. I did have the Fried Chicken but held the potatoes. Also tried the killer Calamari, the Fried Green Tomatoes, and J.P.’s amazing homage to the corndog, The 1942 State Fair Dog (new to the menu) which was actually first served in 1942! I didn’t eat every bite on my plate but the bites I had left me in a near rhapsodic state. This place just rocks.
And I was pleased to learn that Max’s is now open for lunch. JP does a fast-in fast-out blue-plate special and chomping down one of those is my next goal. Check out their menus at maxswinedive.com.
