Austin Wine and Food Festival Cancellation
For the first time in the 30-year history of the event the Austin Wine and Food Festival was cancelled this past weekend.
That’s sad but sadder still to see how far this has strayed from its original roots. Ed and Susan Auler, founders of Fall Creek Winery had begun the Texas Hill Country Wine and Food Festival back in 1986. It was a smaller affair back then with the showcase on central Texas wines and chefs.
But then Saveur Magazine stepped in and finally C3 and the local celebration had become anything but. Call me a chauvinist but I would like to sip more regional wines and taste the efforts of our chefs whose restaurants I can actually visit by way of car!
I can watch Andrew Zimmern or Bobby Flay anytime on the Travel Channel. Don’t need them to showcase an Austin festival. I don’t think we need to compete with Aspen.
