Bee Caves Road Strikes Again: ZuZu, Bella Serra and Zoot All Close
There is something positively weird about Bee Caves Road in Westlake and on toward the town of Bee Caves when it comes to restaurants. With the exception of The Country Line, Chinatown and the Grove, I can’t think of any owner-operated spots that have lasted there for any length of time.
More recent casualties include ZuZu’s, which featured healthy and very tasty Mexican fare. They have another location off 2222 and Mopac that appears to be doing well, but the Bee Caves spot just couldn’t cut it.
The closing of Zoot is a shocker. This was one of my favorite restaurants for years in its location on Hearn off Lake Austin Boulevard. The final day of business will be June 8th and owner Stuart Scruggs plans to redo the concept and reopen as the BC Tavern (obviously more casual and with lower price points). Frankly, I never really understood why Scruggs lit out for the territories, so to speak, when the other spot seemed so well established. Ah well.
And Bella Serra’s closing does not surprise me. Frankly, I’m surprised they lasted as long as they did. This was one of those restaurants that I chose not to review because there really wasn’t much good that could be said about. There’s plenty of good Italian food nearby with Tony C’s and Mandola’s Market just a few miles away.
