“Better Than Sex” in Key West
Okay, calm down folks. This is actually the name of a dessert only restaurant in Key West. The place is as you might expect, dark and seductive. And the dishes themselves are about a 10 on the aphrodisiac scale. You can begin with the “Between My Red Sheets Velvet Cheesecake” or sample the “Chocolate Grilled Cheese.” (This is Danish brie cheese and dark Belgian chocolate grilled on homestyle buttered bread and kissed with cinnamon and sugar.) Another favorite is the Jungle Fever: the description alone is R rated.
“Smooth. Soft. Supple. A warm airy chocolate cake full of a body that’s oozing a subtle chocolate pudding underneath. Rubbing up against cool white vanilla bean balls.” Holy guacamole, I’d order that one sight unseen.
And my favorite description is for the namesake Better Than Sex dessert. “Deep. Dark. Chocolate. Penetrates big, bold Bing cherries swimming in a ménage a trois of chocolate and baked, dark dense Pumpernickel bread and butter. A bread pudding that magically bakes into a cross between a cake, brownie, and bread pudding that melts in your mouth.” The last line: “Served with White Chocolate Truffle Mousse” seems almost superfluous.
Can you guess where I’m heading on my next visit to Key West? Sure as hell not the Hemingway museum.
