Zydeco Music and Crawfish Etouffée: A Night at Evangeline Cafe
The mix of music and food has long been an intoxicating allure to Austinites. Restaurants may not always have the right music or it may be too loud. But we know when it works.
And when the mix is spot on, we tend to patronize the hell out of the venue.
I was craving some Cajun food one Friday night and my wife and I swung by Evangeline Café on Brodie Lane. While we had always enjoyed the food at Evangeline we’d never gotten to listen to the live music. There was a Zydeco group playing that night. The intoxicating melange of country, blues, folks tunes and even Caribbean music featuring accordion, guitars, electric bass and washboards was captivating. The vocalist yodeled as much as he sang but it seemed to work.
Our blonde crawfish etouffée was delivered by our server who deftly maneuvered her way between the packed tables. While tapping our toes to the engaging melodies we dug in.
Maybe it was my imagination but as the music washed over us it seemed to enhance each savory spoonful of the etouffée. And I’d have to say it was pretty much the same for the alligator bites as well.
In retrospect, Shakespeare had it all pretty well figured out when he wrote “If music be the food of love, play on …” I think Curtis Clark and his crew at Evangeline Café understand that very well!
