Cafe Malta Opens at 3421 William Cannon

A new Mediterranean-styled restaurant has opened at 3421 William Cannon (at Brodie) called Cafe Malta. Tried it for the first time a few days ago and this place has a lot of promise. Their signature dish, the Maltagliati is a house-made pasta topped with a ragout of roasted pork and a mellow sauce of tomatoes, herbs, olive oil and garlic. I was very impressed. Also tried the Pate de Campagne which was delightful, and the ravioli with an arugula pesto was also excellent. The Gnocchi was the only blemish on an otherwise excellent first tasting as it was overcooked with a sauce that lacked flavor.

But for a restaurant that has only been opened for 5-6 weeks, this place was encouraging. I will definitely be back. It’s also nice to have another owner-operated restaurant in the area as there are relatively few. Look for more Northern African and Middle Eastern dishes to work their way onto the fluid menu in weeks to come. Check out their menu at cafemaltaaustin.com.
