Cantine on South Lamar Closes
I’ve always been an Emmet Fox fan (the force behind Austin restaurants Asti and Fino) and I really enjoyed his latest venture, Cantine on South Lamar. But Cantine has now gone dark, and frankly I’m not surprised. South Lamar bears virtually no resemblance to what it looked like five years ago. There are simply too […]
Revamped Hudson’s on the Bend Closes After Just a Few Months
Jeff Blank’s original Hudson’s on the Bend on Hwy 620 near Lakeway had a 32-year run. The wildly original restaurant that introduced Austinites to Rattlesnake Fritters and Grilled Wildebeast to name a few was an ongoing classic until it closed last year. Alas, the new Hudson’s which replaced the original closed after Valentine’s Day this […]
El Gallo Closing
One by one the dominos seem to be falling with respect to classic, family-owned restaurants in Austin. The latest casualty is the iconic El Gallo on S Congress which has been dishing up Tex Mex for 60 years. The Kennedy family has had to shut its doors because they simply can’t keep pace with rising […]
Zed’s Once Again Shuttered
The on-again off-again story of Zed’s in the Tech Ridge center is apparently off again. This north Austin comfort food spot had opened and closed several times. It was a decent place in an area off I 35 that is significantly in need of some good dining spots. Our readers have told us that it […]
Fore In Lakeway Closes
Fore in Lakeway closed on Tuesday, one day shy of it’s 5th anniversary. The New-American styled restaurant and bar on RR 620 opened strongly under Chef James Ramsey five years ago. But co-owner James Dineoodie noted the huge number of new restaurant openings in the Lakeway area and felt that would only further dilute his […]
Liberty Kitchen on W 5th Closes
One of the most popular pictures on my Instagram page (robbalondines) is of the Seafood Gumbo at Liberty Kitchen on W 5th. Well that will no longer be available as the restaurant has closed. I’m sad for this smallish Texas chain out of Houston and I’m personally ticked off because I really enjoyed the place. […]
100 Pizzitas Closes
There goes another one! We reported last week on the closing of Due Forni at 6th and Congress. This week it’s another pizza closing: 100 Pizzitas. It was the first North American location of a Spanish pizza chain on E 7th. They actually had 100 pizzas to choose from and the ones I tried were […]
Due Forni Closes
Another major downtown closing has occurred. On the heels of the Cantina Laredo closing, Due Forni has closed. The restaurant closed without notice Thursday, July 21st. Due Forni, which literally translated to “two ovens” opened several years ago at 6th and Congress at the former site of Louie’s 106. I was there as recently as […]
Cantina Laredo Closes
In what is becoming a somewhat alarming trend downtown, another restaurant, in this case Cantina Laredo, has closed. They had a strong ten-year run but were unable to come to terms with their landlord on a new lease. I always enjoyed Cantina, from their Carnitas to their table side Guacamole. And I will miss it!
Imperia Closes
A few years back Imperia on Colorado was introduced to Austin as the home of “vibe dining” and an extension of the famous TAO restaurants in Vegas and New York.[They opened with the Sous Chef from Tao Vegas on board]. It also introduced many of us to C.K.Chin who has now become, shall we say, […]
Satay Closes
I’ve known Dr. Foo Swasdee for many years and it is with regret that we must report that her pioneering Thai restaurant, Satay, is closing. Seems like the Anderson Lane eaterie has been around forever and it almost has. It opened in 1987. Swasdee is the only restaurant owner I know with a PhD in […]
Stephan Pyles Shuttering Famous Dallas Restaurant
Stephan Pyles has been pleasing Dallas palates for years and his influence reaches down to Austin as well. So it’s a big story up north that Pyle’s namesake restaurant is closing. He’s at the end of another of his ten-year cycles and well, just like the chef of Star Canyon fame will be moving on. […]
Hudson’s on the Bend to Have Last Service Saturday night.
One of Austin’s most iconic restaurants, Hudson’s on the Bend, will have its last service Saturday night. Jeff Blank’s incredible 32-year run will come to an end and he will be sorely missed. The restaurant will close for a time and will reopen at an undetermined date under new ownership.. Nonetheless, as a tribute to […]
La V Closes
In the wake of the unfortunate closing of the exquisite La V on E 7th, one wonders just how much room there is in Austin for high end dining spots like this. Owner Ralph Eads, in a gracefully written closing release, said that he would rather close than fail to provide the exceptional dining experience […]
