The Iconic Lovejoy’s Serves Final Drink August 5th
My son-on-law John and his buddies loved this place between 6th and 7th on Neches. I asked John what his favorite “dive bar” was an he immediately mentioned Lovejoy’s. My friend Rob used to DJ there. It was a monument to the “keep Austin weird” vibe that used to characterize as lot of this city. […]
European Bistro in Pflugerville to Close August 31st
I have been a huge fan of this Hungarian-themed but wonderfully eclectic restaurant since it opened 11 years ago on E. Main in Pflugerville. Anna and Piroska are two women who are at home with the nuances of eastern European fare and they have a small but devoted following of area foodies. Had they opened […]
Jovita’s on South First Closes After FBI Raid
Jovita’s, a long-time Austin restaurant was raided early Thursday morning after an FBI raid prompted by an investigation of drug trafficking at the restaurant itself, and at several houses behind it. Eighteen people were arrested for their alleged involvement in heroin distribution, including Amado Pardo whose family owns Jovita’s. This is not the first incident […]
Estancia Churrascaria Closes 290 South Location: Opens Larger Store at Arboretum
Many fans of Estancia Churrascaria (me included) were sad to see the recent closing of the 290 South store next to the Holiday Inn Express. But owner Ironi has opened a new and larger location of the popular Brazilian steakhouse at the Arboretum. I had lunch there last week and the place is larger and […]
Chon Som on Wells Branch Pkwy Closes
We are sad to announce that Chon Som will be closing their doors permanently on Sunday, March 18th. It has indeed been a fun passionate adventure for Nat & Marissa Sawatphadungkij with lots of memories that will be with us forever.
Domingo’s near Dripping Springs Closes
Out near Dripping Springs, Domingo’s, an owner-operated restaurant on Highway 290 in what had been the former Stadium Grill, has also closed. Domingo made some very decent Mexican food: in fact, I thought his Shrimp Fajitas and his Talapia al Mojo de Ajo were terrific. The place was not much on ambiance but had a […]
Romeo’s on Barton Springs Closes
Romeo’s, a long-time occupant at the corner of Barton Springs near South Lamar has closed its doors. The Italian restaurant with the popular piano bar had a long run at its location but the proverbial lockout letter from the landlord posted on the door signaled the unfortunate end of this cozy little joint. It’s not […]
Old School Grill on Parmer Lane Closes
In a move that caught many, me included, by surprise, Old School Grill on Parmer Lane closed its doors last week. I really did enjoy their food along with a lot of regulars. I guess there just weren’t enough of them. And that has been a tough area for owner operated places to flourish. Dan […]
Manny Hattan’s Deli at Gateway Closes
This is a shocker. First Katz’s several years ago and now Manny Hattan’s at the Gateway Center has closed leaving Austin with exactly zilch when it comes to NYC styled Jewish delis. This borders on the brink of unthinkable. Where in the hell am I going to get my Gefilte Fish now and my chicken […]
Shoreline Grill to Close on Jan. 31st
The second major downtown restaurant closing (the first being McCormick and Schmick’s on Congress) of the year has been announced, and unfortunately it is one of my long time favorites, the Shoreline Grill. For 23 years, the Shoreline has graced the shores of first Town and then Ladybird Lake with a wonderful blend of innovative […]
Ilsa’s in Spicewood Closes
The answer to where’s a good German joint in the Hill Country was: Ilsa’s on Highway 71 in Spicewood. Alas, that is no more. Ilsa’s has closed its doors and that’s unfortunate. I liked the place a lot. It was never anything than what it purported to be: simple, basic and tasty German chow. The […]
Chinatown Bee Caves Road to Close Sunday, Jan. 29th
One of the longest running restaurant enterprises in Westlake, Chinatown on Bee Caves, will close its doors for good on Sunday, January 29th. Linda Cheng, ex wife of co-founder Ronald Cheng has decided to pack it in. And that’s too bad. It was a great little restaurant for many years. But escalating rent and other […]
Sago Closes
Sago, the interior Mexican styled restaurant at the Triangle off Guadalupe closed for business on Wednesday, Dec. 14th. No reason was given for the closing. I enjoyed Sago and am saddened by the loss of yet another good locally-owned restaurant.
The Lighthouse BBQ and Grill in Spicewood Closes
First, they had to dodge the wild fires. Then they had to combat the fall off in lake traffic because of the low water levels. Finally, it just got overwhelming and so one of my favorite waterfront joints, The Lighthouse in Spicewood, has closed. I genuinely liked this place and will miss the cue and […]
El Arbol Closes
Just about everyone I talked to lately loved El Arbol. But alas, the popular Mexican restaurant recently closed its doors for good. We’ll try to get more of the story for you as news becomes available.
