Craving an American Style Gyro? Phoenicia Still Stands at the Top

Posted by on Jan 26, 2021 in Greek, Mediterranean

I have long enjoyed the classic American style Gyro (pronounced yē-rō), the combination of lamb and beef cooked on a rotisserie and served in thin slices on fresh pita bread with tzatziki sauce, white onions, lettuce, and tomato.

In Greece, gyros are stuffed exclusively with beef but in this case I opt for taste over tradition. And in my opinion the best gyros in Austin can be found at Phoenicia Bakery and Deli with locations on South Lamar and Burnet.

Owner Malek Abijaoude is best known for his role in baking the majority of the pita breads used in Austin, but he and his son Malek make some fiercely tasty gyros on ridiculously delicious pita bread.

They have withstood a variety of challengers (Halal Bros, for one) but they still rule. As I write this I’m getting seriously hungry. Not hard to see why!
