David Garrido Latest Austin Chef to Get “Chopped”
Those who watch the Food Network’s “Chopped” will recognize all the elements of contrived reality show drama. Chefs confronting a virtually impossible task thereby revealing their fobiles and even the most minor culinary hiccups. Then they have to present the dish in front of three usually obnoxious and condescending judges.
David Garrido’s turn on Chopped aired Tuesday night. Another Austin chef featured in the program was the very talented Sonia Cote from Hillside Farmacy. Garrido called me the next morning. The only thing he was pleased about was that the show aired opposite the Spurs-Heat game.
Of course, the long time exec at Jeffrey’s and current owner of the upscale Garrido’s on 3rd, like most chefs, was put into a challenge where he was presented with items that he didn’t usually work with. The two vegan chefs on the show were much more comfortable with the ingredients and Garrido lost. Not to mention he cut his finger making the entree and there was not a bandage in the house!
He resisted when the show initially contacted him. But the producer persisted and he finally relented. Welcome to show biz Food Network style David. But patrons of Garrido’s which has gone to an evening only serving schedule will find no hint of lack of familiarity with any dishes that grace his menu. He is exceptionally talented chef, something that doesn’t get revealed in the bizarre pressure cooker known as Chopped.
