Fourth of July Weekend: Burgers and Q
As we approach the Fourth of July weekend, all red-blooded central Texans are hunkering down for fireworks, get togethers, and of course, whether at a restaurant or at home, burgers and barbecue. The two go together like apple pie and ice cream, Rick and Anita, even Obama and Boehner (well, on second thought…).So here’s a few suggestions for the weekend. Enjoy the 4th, and stay safe. Here’s some burger recommendations.
The Oasis
The iconic joint atop lake Travis is doing a three day Burger Bash from the 3rd to the 6th. Choose from the famous Black and Bleu Burger to the Heritage Burger to the good old fashioned All American Burger. Available all day and night! These are gooood.
All Star Burger
Shane Street’s burger emporium at the Galleria will be in full swing this weekend. He’s got an eclectic assortment of burgers including the Ranch Hand, the Veteran, and the amazing Make My Day burger. Sweet potato fries are very good, and the shakes are a delight.
Hopdoddy
The daily line out the door stands in eloquent testimony to the quality of this South Congress joint. It’s ain’t gonna be any different on the 4th, probably worse. But the wait is worth it.
Hut’s
This grand old gal on West 6th just keeps getting better. The Buddy Holly is still my favorite and the gigantic onion rings are still terrific. They also have a really tasty hot dog (if you’ll permit a digression).
Dan’s
This old school burger joint still cranks ’em out with the best. I love the Jalapeno Cheese Burger. Go early. It’ll be crowded.
Stinson’s Bistro
This newish bistro took over the Lake Austin Boulevard space formerly occupied by Pizza Bistro, and they have rolled out some burgers at this cozy location that are more than worth a try.
Mighty Fine Burgers
This place never fails to disappoint. The burgers are done medium-well, yet they’re not overcooked. Juicy works of art is what they are. Simple menu and great fries to go with. I like the Brodie store.
Dahlia Café
If you’re in the Liberty Hill area over the 4th, the Dahlia’s burgers are a must. Try the Burning Ring of Fire Burger (an homage to Johnny Cash) that is a messy and tasty delight. Also the Patty Melt and the Mushroom Swiss Burger.
And for barbecue, well, I can’t list them all but here are some of my favs.
Stiles Switch
This relative newcomer compared to some of our older joints delivers on a lot of levels. The Beef Chuck Ribs are friggin’ amazing as is the Thorndale sausage. Great family vibe here.
It’s All Good Bar-B-Q
This newer joint in Spicewood cranks out a Beef Short Rib that tops the scales at at least a pound and is my favorite. Grillmaster Frankie Hoch (the subject of this week’s podcast on Dining Out with Rob) is very talented and has a sense of humor to match: all critical to great Q!
Franklin
Say what you will about the endless line, these are pork ribs made in BBQ heaven. Best I’ve ever tasted, anywhere. The rest ain’t bad either 🙂
Rudy’s Country Store and Bar-B-Q
I am specifically talking about the four local Rudy’s owned by Ken Schiller and his partners. The Moist Brisket is to die for. Perfectly smoked, beautifully marbled, and just melts on each bite. Perfect stuffing for tortillas as well. They probably have the best St. Louis Ribs around as well.
John Mueller Meat Company
The much travelled grillmaster once employed Aaron Franklin. Today he is jamming them in at the John Mueller Meat Company 2500 East 6th. Best known for his beef ribs, he also delivers a mean brisket and great turkey.
La Barbecue
Home of the former John Mueller trailer on South 1st, John’s sister knows a thing or two about Q as well. Across from Sway.
Micklethwaits Craft Meats
This little joint on Rosewood features ribs and brisket from chef Tim Micklethwait. It ‘s got a serious cadre of fanatical fans including me.
PoK-e-Jo’s
Smallish locally-owned chain (Danny Haberman is one of the nicest guys in the business) and their pork ribs and sausage are to die for. Moreover, they have the largest and tastiest array of sides in central Texas. Hell these could satisfy a vegetarian. Love this little group.
Luling City Market
Worth the drive. Best cue in that area, including Lockhart’s well known spots.
