Gonzo’s Gorge at Sagra
Rob’s Gonzo Gourmet Club swung back into action at Sagra this past Sunday night. Gabrielle Pellegrini’s SAGRA at 17th and San Antonio put on a really nice 5-course dinner with wines personally selected by the chef. Sagra is at 17th and San Antonio at the site formerly occupied by Mars.

Sagra
The meal began with a choice of two huge salads: Caesar and Arrugula. The next course consisted of one of Sagra’s famous old-country pizzas top with tomatoes, garlic, a fresh egg, pecorino cheese, and a skosh of truffle oil. To say they went quickly is an understatement.
The third course was penne pasta in a marinara sauce. The sauce had a sweetness that resonated with the Gonzos.
Course #4 gave us options for salmon in a beurre blanc sauce, a sliced hangar steak with sautéed spinach and a salsa verde (Bistecca a la Fiorentina) and a tender chicken breast with prosciutto, fresh tomato, lemon butter, arugula and balsamic vinaigrette (Pollo alla San Danielle).
And finally the dessert courses: the lovely Torta (warm chocolate cake) and the Gatto di Formaggi (cheese cake).
All the courses were paired with excellent wine choices that complemented every dish. And the beauty of it all was that the cost per person, plus tax and tip, was about HALF of what a typical wine dinner in Austin would cost.
There are a lot of advantages to being in the Gonzo Gourmet Club: wonderful, discounted meals at Austin’s finest restaurants, the camaraderie of like-minded lovers of great food and the grape, and the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping the smallish, owner operated restaurants maintain their presence in the competitive Austin market.
