The setting was a fun raiser for the Theatre Action Project which benefits creative arts education. The scene was the deck at Central Market on Lamar. The challenge: which of three chefs could throw down the absolute best mac and cheese. There was some serious competition. Stuart Scruggs from Zoot and Wink, Lou Lambert from Lambert’s Downtown BBQ, and Hoover Alexander from Hoover’s Cooking.

And the judges were up for the event as well. Joining Rob at the judges table were Addie Broyles from the AAS, Mando from Taco Journalism, and two very cute nine-year old girls Mylea and Dottie who had won contests at their respective schools.

The mac and cheese hit the judges table and the tasting began. All the preparations were quite good but Lou and Stuart presented slightly more upscale versions of this classic dish. Given that we had two kid judges whose ballots counted equally and that Hoover’s preparation tends to be more family style and old fashioned, I was not surprised to see Hoover walk away with the trophy.

A great time was had by all and while I loved Hoover’s mac and cheese, Stuart and Lou brought some serious taste and crunch to their versions as well.
