In Search of a Cronut? Head to La Pâtisserie.
It’s scary when you think how social media sites know as much about you as they do.
So I wasn’t surprised when I logged on to Google the other day and up popped a story on the second most popular donut in the United States. (So they clearly know I like the occasional trip to Mrs. Johnson’s Bakery.)
And that, of course, is the cronut.
If you haven’t had a cronut you are missing out. The confection was created by pastry chef Dominique Ansel in 2013 for his New York City bakery as a special for Mother’s Day. Response from both croissant and donut lovers was immediate. Soon donut shops around the country were scrambling for his recipe so they could duplicate his amazing melange of flavors and textures.
So where in Austin does one go to find an authentic cronut? You might want to start at La Pâtisserie on West Annie in South Austin. They have their own unique take on the cronut called the CroBrio and if it’s any bit as good as their macaroons it’s worth the trip! This is a unique and delightful version of the classic French model. (We lived on them during our last trip to Paris.) This is another location of La Pâtisserie in North Austin on Burnet Rd as well.
