I know that news has been suffering from the “Olympics vortex” lately, but what a reach for Time Magazine to publish a piece on the 13 most influential candy bars of all time. What blows my mind is the winner: I immediately thought it would be Snickers but the winner was the Kit Kat bar, the first candy to be marketed around the concept of sharing. 2nd was the Hershey Milk Chocolate Bar, and 3rd was my Swiss favorite Toblerone.

Snickers, arguably one of the best marketed, the best selling, and in my opinion the tastiest of all candy bars, finished fifth.

Personally, I could give a tinker’s damn about Kit Kat bars. They’re short on flavor, melt was too easily, and really aren’t that interesting. Snickers is an amazing candy bar which has changed little from its inception in 1930. Great ads as well. (Remember the one with Betty White?)

Farther down the list at #11 was another personal fav, The Baby Ruth, named after the Bambino himself. Ranked one before that at #10 was Nestle Crunch. Great bar and have always enjoyed it. The classic Milky Way came in a distant 12th while Twix and Three Musketeers didn’t even make the list. Arrggghhh!!!

At number #6 was a bar called Chicken Dinner, believe it or not, which was discontinued in the early 60’s (it took that long?). The authors of the piece included it because they believe that it paved the way for today’s Power Bars (uh huh).

Reese’s Cups could arguably fall into the candy bar category, but not a word: ditto for Almond Joy and Mounds. Are you kidding me? And how could the all time female favorites Rollo or Godiva be left off the list? And what about the classic Zero bars I used to love as a kid?

I think Time was also impacted by the Olympic vortex when they wrote this piece. Like the snow in Sochi, the brains of the authors got a bit slushy.
