Long-Time Hut’s Location on 6th Street Has a New Occupant: Sammie’s Italian
Our last visit to Hut’s, one of Austin’s true icons, was memorable. We did our usual Buddy Holly burger along with fries and the gigantic onion rings and of course the essential strawberry shakes.
We took some silly photos with me holding the rings like ski goggles, recalled all the great time’s we’d had there and wondered what the future would hold for that revered space.
Well it took several years but Sammie’s Italian, yet another concept from the all-encompassing McGuire Moorman Hospitality team has just opened there.
The idea is an approachable neighborhood kind of Italian restaurant. Think of the Billy Joel song Scenes From an Italian Restaurant (“bottle of red, bottle of white …”) and you get the idea.
The menu is pretty straightforward with lots of favorites from linguine vongole, chicken parm, various pasta dishes with an emphasis on marinara sauces, and of course mozzarella sticks and cannolis. You can view their dinner menu here.
I like the idea. Of course given my East Coast roots I would have preferred if they’d named it Luigi’s but Sammie’s is okay too.
