Overheard in a BBQ Queue
We shot my KVUE-TV review last week at the almost universally discussed and acclaimed Franklin BBQ last week on E. 11th. When we arrived at 11am, the equally-discussed line was just over 2 hours long and well down toward the parking lot behind the restaurant. In between setting up different camera shots, I had the opportunity to catch snippets of conversation between groups of patrons in the queue. It went something like this.“I heard he (Aaron Franklin) worked at The Salt Lick.”
“No, his father had a place.”
“I thought he worked for John Mueller.”
“What are you getting today.?”
“Same thing as always. Pork ribs and turkey.”
“Why not try something different.”
“What the hell for? It’s the best. Besides, you always get the pork ribs.”
“Well….I think I had turkey once back at the trailer.”
“What’s the longest you’ve ever waited?
“I don’t know. Maybe a couple of hours. Does it really matter?”
“An hour and a half is my longest so far.”
“So you’d split and go home if it got longer?”
“I don’t know. That’d be a tough call.”
“Did you ever try the trailer?”
“Back when it first opened. Really short waits then. But I like the new place.”
“When did this open?”
“Last year I think. The news was all over the place.”
“We heard about it in San Antonio.”
“So you came up from San Antonio?”
“Yeah, the three of us love Austin BBQ.”
“We saw it on the Travel Channel. That guy who used to be a chef.”
“Bobby Flay?”
“No, the guy is Anthony Bordain. Flay’s on the Food Network.”
“He must be bulimic. No way he can eat all that crap and stay so thin.”
“What used to be here?”
“I think it was some other rib place.”
“I just heard they might be out of the Pulled Pork.”
“No way! Shit, that’s my favorite.”
“Way dude. Should have gotten here earlier.”
“Hope they still have ribs and brisket.”
“Hey, aren’t you the food guy from Fox 7?”
“No, not any more. I’ve been with KVUE the past three years.”
AND SO IT WENT! BON APPETIT!
