Romanian Restaurant Drakula Closes

Just when I was boasting to a friend that Austin was beginning to have quite a variety of ethnic restaurants (and I don’t include Mexican in that category) it appears that we have lost one. Drakula, the neat little Romanian restaurant just off 183 at Lamar near the Comedy Club has shut its doors. I really liked this place and will miss it.

Why didn’t they spell it Dracula? Well, the owner was talking to a lady at the TABC and she pronounced it “Dras-u-la.” Mortified that customers would not know how to pronounce the name of the famous Transylvania count, the owner changed the spelling to Drakula.

There is now a South American restaurant in the same space. I hope they fare better.
