Roy’s on 2nd St. Closes
This was a shocker. The staff at Roy’s got a call from corporate on Monday, May 24th, and the news as not good. They were to cease operations.
Roy’s, part of a very high end chain began by fusion chef Roy Yamaguchi of Hawaii, was an exemplary dining location in Austin. They opened at the height of the Austin tech boom. Although they suffered a bit from the “revolving chef” syndrome, the food was always first rate. Yamaguchi’s recipes were faithfully executed to the delight of a fanatically loyal customer base. But alas, there were apparently not enough of them.
I will miss Roy’s. A few of the dishes might have been a bit too sophisticated and nuanced for that portion of our city that loves Tex Mex, steak, and BBQ. But diversity of dining is what makes a great city. At some point, we’re going to have to figure that out!
