Song La Bursts Onto the Austin Asian Scene With Taiwanese Street Food
If you’ve never had the opportunity to enjoy Taiwanese street food, you are in luck!
Song La has opened on 23rd street near the UT campus, and my first bite of the braised pork belly told me all I needed to know. The slow cooking process imparts an amazing texture to this dish. And the amalgam of flavors in this dish represents the Taiwanese street genre at its very best.
Their pork chop bento box is another paean to all classic Taiwanese cooking. If you have yet to try a Taiwanese pork chop then you must give this one a go. It’s served over sushi-style rice with grilled broccoli, Taiwanese cabbage and a savory tofu.
Another irresistible temptation is the chicken bites. These bear no resemblance whatsoever to the tedious bites one finds in a plethora of fast food joints. They have a unique blend of crafted batters elevating the chicken tenders to an appealing and comforting level of flavors. You’ll never go back to Mickey D’s after sampling these bites.
And you gotta try the tofu fries. I’m a sucker for tofu so I may have a bit of a bias, but served along with Taiwanese kimchi, they are seriously flavor forward.
This is just a brief introduction to the good eats that await at Song La. I expect we’ll be talking much more about them in the coming weeks and I look forward to your feedback!
