Spam Comes Back with a WHAM at Poke Austin
Spam is one of those kinds of canned meats that many people disdain upon initial contact.
But because of its long shelf life and no need for refrigeration, it was introduced to GIs in Hawaii during World War II. The product gradually spread to the locals and to this day remains a phenomenally popular black market commodity in the Aloha State.
Austin eventually became interested in Spam and launched tongue-in-cheek events like the iconic Spamarama, which was held for 30 years until it was recently reborn.
Because of its Hawaiian heritage, the owners of Poke Austin decided to top their poke bowls with fried Spam along with the traditional tuna sashimi. I must say, having never tried Spam, I thought it fit nicely in the poke bowl.
As to the idea to add Spam, given that we live in the city of the original Spamarama, why the heck not?
