Supporting Local Owner Operated Restaurants Is Easy When They Serve Food Like Homespun Kitchen & Bar
I’ve always been a proponent of owner operated restaurants; the places where the owners are there to welcome you (like Katz’s) where their enthusiasm is tangible, where their imprint can be seen on virtually every facet of the menu, where there are always a significant number of “regulars,” and where the food is almost always excellent.
Homespun Kitchen & Bar is such a restaurant. Owners Jennifer Walker and Randy Ford have got themselves a gold mine of a dining, drinking and entertainment establishment to go that is literally a gift delivered daily to Dripping Springs.
My wife and I go there often, some nights to sit on the patio for appetizers and a glass of wine while listening to live music. Other nights we sit inside for a full course dinner.
Recently we began with appetizers: the amazing Philly Cheesesteak Onion Rings (these novel, savory and crunchy rings are a must try) the classic deviled eggs with just the right touch of jalapeños and mac and cheese with cavatappi pasta, Parmesan cheese, bacon, bread crumbs, and scallions in a cast iron skillet. They’re a crunchy amalgam of oozy goodness and I know I’m not alone in that opinion.
The entree was the catfish étouffée over white rice and, whether fried or blackened, the catfish totally works to achieve a seriously Cajun vibe.
The desert was Jennifer’s own creation and my personal favorite: the strawberry cake with a strawberry cream frosting. The cake was beautifully moist and when served out of the cooler it was first bite bliss. And it got even better with the sounds of The Eagles drifting in from the patio.
Oh, and did I mention finishing the evening off with a glass of bourbon from Randy’s world class stash?
These are just a few of the components that owner operators bring to the tables at their restaurants, and that’s why those restaurants like Homespun are so easy to like and support.
