Winners from the Gypsy Picnic Trailer Cook Off

Aside from the fact that it was cold as hell when we began judging at 9am this past Saturday morning at Auditorium Shores, the task of rating the food from over 30 of Austin’s food trailers was a pleasant one.

Royito's Hot Sauce

The judges were sequestered in a tent at the east side of festival and C3 Productions, the guys who put on the ACL Festival, joined with organizer Tiffany Harelik in keeping things running smoothly. There was a lot of eating going on but it was an enjoyable experience. I enjoyed shooting the breeze with my fellow judges Mick Vann of the Austin Chronicle, Brian Beck of KGSR, Cecillia Nasti, formerly with KGSR and soon to air a new radio series called Field and Feast, and the Statesman’s food writer Matt Odam.

The winners were as follows:

Carnivore’s Delight: Torchy’s Tacos
Most Veggie-Licious: Banarachy
Darn Good Dessert: Cutie Pies
Trailblazing Creation: The Mighty Cone
Greatest Gulp: Holy Cacao

And I would add an additional winning category: Most Inspirational Offering: Royito’s Hot Sauce. This is from GSD&M CEO Roy Spence who has decided to work his way “down” the corporate ladder by inspiring young entrepreneurs to “never do mild!”

In truth though, every trailer there was a winner. The food was seriously good and the place was packed with Austin foodies throughout a long morning and afternoon.
